Does anyone understand Error Messages

I wouldn't claim to have a great knowledge of all the things that go in to today's modern technologies but I think, given basic instuctions, I could work out how to get my way around today's gadgets - mobile phones, X-boxes or computers.

As you can see from earlier posts on this blog I'm having trouble with my new company's email system which was working perfectly for the last six months until last Wednesday night.

I've spent quite a while today trying to get some idea where to start looking for the reason why the sudden change came about and the only clue I can find is this error message. Can anyone explain what it means?

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'martinjack@thinkdifferentevents.co.uk', Server: 'mail.thinkdifferentevents.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Cheers mate, any contact I've had with the hosting company is through their own webpage forms and they keep bouncing me to their knowledge base!! Can't find a telephone number for them as yet.

Jacky - you might want to set your blog so that comments appear in the same window and not a pop up - it makes things easier for anyone wanting to leave a comment with links in them, like I did above. When you click the link it opens in the same window and thr popup then has to be expanded for you to see it properly.

If you go into your blog admin - under SETTINGS, click COMMENTS, and there's a choice for "Show comments in a popup window" - select 'No'.

Cheers,

John

The error message refers to SSL - so this would seem to be connected with the security configuration. Can you provide a little more information about how you are accessing your mail box - it is web mail or are you using a client like outlook express???

I do appreciate that it must be very fristrating getting in touch with ISP customer support. They always try to refer you to the 'knowledge base' so that they can ensure that any 'obvious' problems are sorted.

In any case if you can provide a little more information I would be happy to give this some thought.

Hi again,

I tried to send an email to you new email address and received the worning message below! This means that there is a problem with the server at LTScotland contacting your email server. This is not totally unusual but it does indicate that there is something not quite right with your mail server. Let me know if you receive the message in question.

Looks like an ISP firewall issue blocking TCP ports 25 and or 110. Microsoft have a page on it as far as Exchange is concerned, which might help explain what's happening and how to sort it...
